ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Mr. David Sanchez currently serves as the Director of Music and Performing Arts Department Chair at Overfelt High School. Mr. Sanchez is also a recognized performer in various music groups in the SF Bay Area.

A proud Spartan, Mr. Sanchez completed his undergraduate studies at San Jose State University with a degree in Music Education with an emphasis on Violin under professors Dr. Sarah Jones-Hayes, and Motoko Toba.

During his time at SJSU, Mr. Sanchez participated in various ensembles that include the SJSU Spartan Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, Historic Music Ensemble, String Quartets, and Mariachi Oro Azul. Mr. Sanchez also belongs to various musical professional organizations including NAfME, CODA, CMEA, and Kappa Kappa Psi both as a leader and member or alumni in full standing.

Mr. Sanchez is currently completing his master’s degree in Education through San Jose State.

A native of East San Jose, David has been exposed to music from an early age in the household. His father being a musician encouraged his studies on the violin from as early as five years old. Receiving his first band lessons at Hubbard Elementary from Randall Barber, Mr. Sanchez was drawn to the flute as his first band instrument for its resemblance in singing quality to that of a violin. Continuing his musical pursuits through middle and high school where Sanchez picked up the saxophone, first on Alto the Bari. During his time at Overfelt High School under the baton of Mike Gomez, (2010-14) Sanchez was awarded the Crown Award for Best Musician 2013, Junior of the Year in Music, and the nationally recognized John Philip Sousa Award for outstanding band members.

Mr Sanchez wishes to uphold the long-standing tradition of quality music at Overfelt High School by providing challenging musical opportunities to the whole school campus.
